The Importance of Literacy

Within the past year I have become involved with an organization called Literacy Volunteers. This has given me insight as to the importance of literacy and how many people around the world are lacking simple literacy skills. Literacy Volunteers also provides opportunities to help people learn English as a second language. Training is provided at least twice per year through the Bangor, Maine Literacy Volunteers office. No special credentials are needed to become a volunteer, just a desire to help someone learn to read or to speak English, with the added benefit of forming a new friendship. Literacy skills are important to all facets of life. All of you reading this blog obviously know how to read. Imagine how much of the information of the world is missing to someone that does not have your skills. Think about becoming a volunteer and Pay It Forward!
